A reminder that school is closed next week (11/22-11/26) for the Fall Break.

At this point, you should have received your student’s report card in the mail.  If you did not receive the report card, please ensure the mailing address in PowerSchool is your current and accurate mailing address.  If you want to verify with the office, please call 619-344-4500.

As grading periods are less clear with a 4 x 4 schedule at the high school level, I want to clarify some of the “grade period” codes you may be identifying on the report card or Parent Portal.

Here are the grading period codes you may see for the first semester:

  • P1 = progress grade in the middle of Quarter 1
  • Q1 = official Q1 grade that is permanent and credit bearing
  • R1 = progress grade for semester long (S1) classes
  • P2 = progress grade in the middle of Quarter 2 (this period ends on 12/10)
  • Q2 = official Q2 grade that is permanent and credit bearing (this period ends on 1/21)
  • S1 = official S1 grade that is permanent and credit bearing (this period ends on 1/21)

This difference of grading periods for content areas relates with a technical aspect of PowerSchool that is necessary to execute our complex schedule, while maximizing opportunities to earn credits. Your child likely has a mix of courses with different grading periods.  If you would like to specifically know which grading periods are “progress” or “official” for each of your child’s classes, the best way is to log into Parent Portal and select the “grade history tab.”  There, you will see grades for P1, Q1, and R1.  Grades listed under Q1 are official and will be on student transcripts. If a current class is not listed under Q1, you will find that class under R1 (along with the classes listed under Q1), which designates that the grade for classes not found under Q1 are progress grades and NOT yet on official transcripts.

YES! This is pretty confusing.  But, I want you to know that if you have a question, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s school counselor or myself!  We are here to help you navigate these complexities.
